The Department of Spinal Pathology and Chest Deformity deals with conservative and surgical treatment:

♦ congenital and acquired pathology of the spine;

♦ kyphoscoliosis in children;

♦ deformities of the chest;

♦ high standing of the scapula;

♦ congenital torticollis.

The department has accumulated extensive experience in the treatment of congenital and dysplastic scoliosis, deformity of the chest and high standing of the scapula, etc. Since 1993, surgical treatment of scoliotic disease has been carried out.

Treatment of severe scoliotic deformities carries high risks of complications, remains technically and technologically difficult and extremely time consuming.

The department uses a medical and diagnostic complex for preoperative preparation and planning with the determination of the mobility of the deformed spine on a gravitational frame. During the operation, a neurophysiologist monitors the function of the spinal cord, who will determine the angle of correction of the deformed vertebra to prevent neurological deficits.
Every year, the department receives treatment for about 1000 children with various pathologies of the spine and chest deformities. Corrective corsets of the Chenot type are widely used in the conservative treatment of scoliotic disease in children.
Over the past 2 years, over 70 patients were operated on for dysplastic scoliosis, 31 patients were operated on for congenital scoliosis. Until 2017, for funnel chest deformity, the technique of surgical correction of deformity according to Bairov was used (about 40 operations per year). Currently, the department has implemented the technique of D. Nass. Over the past 3 years, over 40 patients have been operated on.

The department's specialists perform the following types of surgical interventions:

♦ Correction and stabilization of the spine with instrumentation;

♦ Resection of the costal-vertebral hump;

♦ Dorsal spinal fusion with the application of transpedicular screws;

♦ Removal of the hemivertebra with deformity correction in accordance with preoperative planning;

♦ Operations with the pterygoid scapula;

♦ Lowering the scapula in Sprengel's disease (Pozdeev's type operation);

♦ Operation Zatsepin for congenital muscle torticollis;

♦ Thoracoplasty according to D. Nuss.
